This is the best summary of fielding statistics I have seen anywhere. I play around with fielding stats quite a bit so this is a great resource.

LeeLee Panashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17148118898954670307noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23241716.post-79387519168008017432007-11-13T15:51:00.000-05:002007-11-13T15:51:00.000-05:00Thanks for dropping by, Shane. I will definitely recommend this to people who get a little lost trying to figure things out.

Also, I'm sorry Dusty Baker is your manager.ChrisV82https://www.blogger.com/profile/02137082202640849864noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23241716.post-36351663113716690452007-10-30T17:17:00.000-04:002007-10-30T17:17:00.000-04:00Also good to see that, in general, those weighting...Also good to see that, in general, those weightings match the relative sizes of my regression coefficients pretty well. I think the comparison stuff should be interesting too, hopefully I'll get that up over the next night or two.

@Dan, speed of ball and type of ball is, unfortunately, just qualitatively described as far as I know. So the stringer inputting the data would note the coordinates of where a ball lands on the field, but generally would just categorize speed as either fast, medium, or slow, and would categorize ball type as grounder, fly ball, or line drive. BIS has recently included a fourth ball type category for their data, "fliners," for balls that are in between fly balls and line drives.

But that's about as sophisticated as it gets. I've heard that STATS has several stringers inputting each batted ball type, so there's some control for consistency, at least. But it's not particularly sophisticated.

What they probably should be doing is tracking both where a ball lands as well as how long it took to get there. That would allow us to back-calculate trajectory (like at hittracker.com), and would get around all of the problems of qualitative estimates of how hard a ball was hit, etc. But I don't think anyone is doing that right now, unfortunately.

The other big piece of info we could use is information on positioning of each fielder. But that would require the data to be collected via something other than TV broadcasts, which for the time being probably isn't possible.
-jjinazhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07697776280178146413noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23241716.post-37256087548076149522007-10-27T17:13:00.000-04:002007-10-27T17:13:00.000-04:00I've always wondered this... do you know how the s...I've always wondered this... do you know how the speed of the ball, angle (and therefore vector), and those kinds of variables are tracked without the kind of technology that mlb pitch f/x uses?

Also, how are play by play data applied to some of these stats?danhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11635462248852203362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23241716.post-36787233389824895382007-10-27T13:46:00.000-04:002007-10-27T13:46:00.000-04:00Great overview of fielding evalation, Justin.
